The Materialist suggests that $350 is a bargain for a good pair of men's shoes. This seems excessive to me too, but consider that he believes this pair of shoes will last at least a decade.
That's $35 a year for ten years. I know I've had shoes between the $30-$60 dollar range that just broke down on me before a year was out. Most shoes in this price range don't last much more than two years, depending on wear.
So what's more luxurious in this case? The luxury of $350 shoes or the luxury of the superficial morality one can get by buying the cheap stuff and ignoring the math? The cheaper stuff is easier for me to do, maybe it's different for others, but I think God's real message here is to pay attention and make a real choice, one that He can work through.
I don't plan on buying $350 dollar shoes anytime soon, by the way.
