Under Pressure

I have a hypothesis that I am working with right now:

A sense of urgency seldom comes from God.

Urgency comes from biological processes, from environmental situations, or often directly from fear, but I haven't seen much to suggest God would use such a feeling to send a message. Usually the sense of urgency is attached to that desire or need that we feel attached to anyway, so God has to patiently wait for us to let that go.

I bet a sense of urgency was why Moses struck that rock one too many times. It's the sort of feeling that suggests we should stop thinking and just do something, which would be a great weapon for the enemy to employ. I am talking, of course, about spiritual things- responding to a sense of urgency when, say, one of your kids falls into a pool, is perfectly sensible.

But in prayer, a sense of urgency is often a distraction, an attempt to get us to stop listening to God.
