The Growth Tyranny

Since I've tried to explain the current financial crisis a few times, I've found myself either using or wanting to use the word sustainable, despite the sad misuse of this word in leftist/foodie circles. So, I thought perhaps another crack at the thing may help. At least I'll be a bit satisfied for having written it, if no one else is.
A pro-growth government is just as socialist as, say a welfare government, they are merely focussed on different metrics. This is one of the reasons I don't like some of the uses of sustainability on the left; they are merely arguments for a welfare state rather than arguments for getting the government out. Many of the policy suggestions, like eating local, are actually less sustainable than the current model and would plunge us into further trouble.
But, in an environment with pro-growth policies, people are rewarded for creating more stuff, often regardless of whether or not it's good for you. In fact, one company can make something not so good for you and then another can make something to counteract those effects. Now, people try to do things like this all the time, but in a free market economy the pressure to re-allocate those resources to something productive shall be felt, and if necessary, businesses will go out of business, so that those assets can be used elsewhere.
