The Lack Of Impetus To Conform

I think, possibly for young teenage girls, the threat of social awkwardness may actually encourage conformity, but step outside a certain range of persons, and it begins to not work so well. For those generally used to being socially awkward, behavior designed to heighten a sense of social awkwardness won't cause conformity; the 'punishment' was already expected as a consequence of being in a social situation. Over time, though, a radical devaluation of social situations in general will ensue, as the reasons why one bothers in the first place are weighed against the increasing friction felt.
