From Yoani Sanchez:
A very high percentage of those who choose a teaching specialty—I would venture a guess that it’s nearly all of them—do so because they have no other option. They are those students who, because of bad grades, can’t aspire to a computer specialty or pre-university hard sciences.
And, of course, here in the supposed land of the free, I have the fond remembrance of what passes for math requirements for education majors. The entire industry is a joke, propped up by nothing but state coercion. Whenever I see students milling about the bus stop, I feel approximately the same as I would if I knew an adult had to go to the country jail and spend eight hours there a day. It is wrong to incarcerate people against their will. The thing they are most likely to learn is how to be bullies, and do unto others what the state has done to them.
Then they'll grow up and be employed by the state to perpetrate its violence.
