Here's an article exploring the possibility that human-like robots begin to creep people out as they become more human looking. It makes sense to me. When we get sick, we still look human, but our physical appearance and behaviours change. All of us pick up on changes like that; biologically an instinct to avoid the sick makes sense.
Theoretically, this means that really well made androids could be psychologically accepted as human, but still creep us out because they would also be unconsciously considered infectious. I wonder how persistent this could be. I suppose someone could research what signals illness to us and then figure out how to work around that. Alternatively, as some are already doing, we can choose to base robot appearance on other criteria, like pets, cartoons, etc... Brightly chromed androids may be the wave of the future after all. They are different enough from us not to trigger the creeps.
