Temporal Authority

I find it disconcerting that christians still call for government action, practically for every little thing. Here's why:

When the Jews came to Samuel asking for a king, God stated quite clearly that this was a rejection of Him. He chose to give them a king, but now, after Jesus quite clearly assumed that title, our attitude toward government authority should return to that of pre-monarchy Israel.

I suppose some would make an argument that this only applies to other kings usurping God's role as king. I don't think this is accurate, however, because other nations had kings as well. In fact, Jesus is King of Kings. So, the problem isn't the type of government, it's the scale and intensity of that government. A king was an extra level of government, a level that God intended to fill for His people. In this day and age, we can see large, over-arching institutions that go far beyond the power of King Saul in his day.

I believe this is an affront to God. The truly arrogant seek to make decisions for many that it is psychologically impossible for a human being to make. We keep missing our chance, for we are only able to follow God for a little way, and then we get derailed because we do not understand that this thing that seems good to us is pure folly. I can say from experience that it is not an easy thing to change.
