Free Market in Language

The United States is the only nation that does not have an official language.

We spoke a lot of German before the first world war; patriotism gave English the edge. Now it's Spanish. I suppose we may find Chinese a strong contender one day.

Of course, we don't speak the same English now either.

There's an incentive to learn English, but there isn't a requirement. I think we are better served pointing out the incentives, like we should be doing with English speaking children. But a law about language would betray our tradition of freedom. We already have enough of that.
