Legitimate Authority

This term is used in the Catholic catechism and it usually refers to government. For instance, if the authority- government, is legitimate, then one should pay taxes, or whatever.
They passed the bailout plan.

I think it's time we educate ourselves on the meaning of legitimacy. Can this government, which allegedly derives it's legitimacy from the Constitution, actually be legitimate since it is in sustained and flagrant violation of the Constitution?

The short answer is no.
