A Russian analyst predicted that the U.S. will break up and thanks to people being really afraid, it's become news. I don't know from what mentality he's coming from, but here is my take on this: for all practical purposes, we should.
The U.S. was never meant to be so top-heavy in the first place. We have a nation with a centralized government far stronger than it should be, and no one ever stopped to think about whether or not there was natural limit on the size the U.S. could grow either. A constitutional government, started with 13 tiny colonies, now stretching all over the place with neither it's former borders nor it's constitution, to limit it.
And this is where the patriot must sit and think about all the reasons he is a patriot. A man would defend his home and family, but what if that man returned from the perimeter to find all that he had was stolen? Why continue the defense?
Ironically, the Russians are currently engaged in such a defense. In the midst of world-wide trends toward decentralization, they've invaded Georgia and are trying to re-establish themselves as a Great Power. A 19th century imperial dream that isn't possible, especially not with their declining population.
