Bryan Caplan argues that traditionalists should make common cause with libertines.
Why? Because they can and usually do avoid close social relations with libertines! A conservative Christian needn't worry that she will accidentally disgrace herself by marrying a libertine, because the libertine has the decency to make his intentions known.
Now, I don't feel Christians who sin are necessarily hypocrites, but Caplan is pointing in the right direction. The disarray found in the Republican party is precisely due to hypocrites- namely people who keep up the pretense of understanding the need for smaller government until they get into office, at which point the unbounded thrill of ever expanding government is just peachy.
