Corn In Israel

We poor Catholics are saddled with terrible bible translations. From today's Mass readings, we see how far we've come since we gave up the Latin:

Jesus took a walk one sabbath day through the cornfields. His disciples were hungry and began to pick ears of corn and eat them.

Now, one could reach way back in time when corn was a more general term and claim this was okay, until you get to the part about picking ears of corn- that's a phrase specific to corn, isn't it?

Way down at the bottom of the page, we see why such lunacy could happen:
Scripture readings taken from the Jerusalem Bible, published and copyright © 1966, 1967 and 1968 by Darton, Longman & Todd, Ltd and Doubleday, a division of Random House, Inc, and used by permission of the publishers.

Hippies! Corn is a new world crop!
