Tracking The Poppy Trade

It's supposedly nearly time for the opium harvest over in Afghanistan. I wonder if the harvest and distribution of such a crop is trackable- in an economic sense. Where does the money go? How does it interact with world financial markets?

The legal crops have commodity markets; info about them usually gets traded on pretty rapidly. It strikes me that illegal crops don't have these types of formal markets around them; less knowledge transfer=less efficient market overall, but plenty enough potential profit for individual players to assume the risks.
