I've long noticed fashionable or trendy people sometimes use the cross, skulls, perhaps even a rosary as accessories. Images of death, especially in pink and pastels, seem incongruous, and the appropriation of Christian symbolism is sacrilegious. While there are certainly a few who enjoy being intentionally sacrilegious out there, I think for the most part the impetus for using these symbols lie elsewhere. The young and fashionable ultimately have to deal with the end of their youth- even if they don't want to think about it- and one rather thoughtless way of dealing with it is by grabbing various symbols that have stood the test of time.

Much of fashion tracks closely with consumerism, specifically of young women, so in large part there is a competition here; if you get married and start having children, you will inevitably spend less on fashion and pay less attention to it. The pagan worshipers of youth and beauty need amulets to ward off what, in their minds, is a terrible fate. The death culture is happy to oblige, even if it means ripping off Christians.

Now, is this a necessary aspect of fashion, or can there be a life affirming approach?
