Separating the Sacred from the Profane

v.s., well, anything we'll hear this Sunday.

When we make sacred things seem pedestrian under some misguided sense (of inclusiveness?) we run the risk of missing the sacred altogether. In some cases one would think the Lord had required casting pearls before swine rather than indicating it was a bad thing. Sure, a few will find the pearl and buy the sty, but many more will pass on by, never catching on. The sacred isn't well understood in America; indeed sacred space seems patently foreign in most cases- this is okay because Christianity isn't American. The best parts of America might be Christian, but the totality of the Way should break like an ocean wave on our shoulders. It should be familiar if we live it, but relentlessly other- on this side of the eschaton, anyway.

Let me end this post, before I think too much about this.
