Considering that government officials actually run my former high school, one would think they could keep kids they institutionalize off the steriods before they go after adults engaged in free enterprise. In my high school, football was king, so they would find the scrawny kids who could throw or run fast and then pump them up. These little dudes would suddenly look distinctly bovine in nature, as if some extraterrestrial rancher was doing everything he could to put 30 extra pounds of meat onto them.
And this is the way of it in baseball, too. Highly skilled people looking for an edge, who are willing to take on risks to their health for better performance. Steroids simply allow them to train harder and to gain more muscle. Steroids don't make talent suddenly appear.
Sadly, I think politicians will keep milking this thing through 2008. I don't particularly like baseball, so it's not a topic I particularly enjoy seeing in the news feeds, especially since people like John McCain use manufactured issues like these to appear relevant. Government can't stop illegal drug use in any venue whatsoever. There are drugs in maximum security prisons! Can there be a more collosal waste of time and money than this $2 million plus gossip column and the related congressional photo-ops?
