Despite being mostly made by Democrats, 80's movies tended to be a bit over the top hopeful.
Reagan was probably the last unexpected president, at least from the elite's perspective. They weren't expecting him to win. He was a normal politician, so they were able to sort of guide his hand, especially since he was a big picture guy and didn't go in for the details.
But he did get some tax cuts passed, and just generally made people hopeful.
Exuberant movies may well come again. Hollywood may or may not participate, but there are a lot of opportunity to bypass those particular gate-keepers.
